Yesterday, I mentioned that I was surprised there weren't any officials trailers or posters out for the new X-Files movie.  Looks like I spoke too soon.  There's a new X-Files poster in town and it looks pretty cool.

Has anyone read any of Simon R. Green's Nightside books?  I'm reading the first one now, about 100 pages into it, and I have to admit I'm a little bit smitten by it.  I'm thinking Jim Butcher fans would really like it (he actually blurbed the book I'm reading) and it does for me what I was hoping the Dresden Files would.  Imagine the middle brother of John Constantine Hellblazer and Fox Mulder  and you'll get Nightside's John Taylor.  Nightside is like Gaiman's London Below, a dark, gothic fantasy world with all kinds of creepiness, humor, and danger; Taylor is the P.I. for hire who doesn't solve things, he finds things, and he lets us ride shotgun while he takes us on a tour of the dark landscape in search of his latest job.  My one complaint is that the characters seem to feel the need to remind us often that that's just how it is "in the Nightside," but the rest of it is so much pulpy fun, I'm fine with it.

Finally, local SoCal punk band Pennywise has a new album out, Reason to Believe, and for the next couple of weeks you can download it from their myspace account for free.  This isn't necessarily an endorsement.  I like some punk music quite a bit, and I was in HS when Pennywise first started getting big (although they were one of those bands that really shunned "getting big").  I confess, aside from "Bro Hymn," I never really got them.  But I grabbed the new album to give them another chance.  It's okay, for a free album, but I'm not sure it changes my opinion of them.  Has anyone else heard it?  What do you think?

They Call Me Spooky, Spooky Mulder

There's some links (here and here) about X-Files 2 today and what Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz are saying make me very happy:

This film will pick up six years after the end of the series.  It's supposed to be a standalone feature removed from the alien mythology of the TV show, a throwback to the show's "monster of the week" episodes.  Still, some lingering aspects from the series, like whether Scully's child with be a normal tyke, will be addressed.  "It will not be a mythology movie, but it's true to everything that's come before," says writer-producer Frank Spotnitz.

and

Carter, who also directs the new movie, said it takes place in the present and uses a story envisioned when the series ended. While the show's sprawling alien mythology isn't part of the plot, Carter said there is a reference to Scully's seemingly supernatural son, William, who was born in season eight and later given up for adoption.

So I'm guessing this means Mulder and Scully on the run from the FBI will be addressed as well.  Awesome.  I ask for nothing more (other than the movie kicks ass).

X-Files 3 Around 2012?

There's a really fun report on the X-Files panel at WonderCon.  Mulder and Scully flew down from the set with Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz.  Oh, and they showed a trailer.  It's a youtube trailer (if it's still up), and it's hard for me to make out exactly what's going on, but I think the best part of it was to hear people going NUTS cheering for Mulder and Scully.  That and it looks creeeeeeeeeeeeepy!

I'm almost disappointed that by the time ComicCon rolls around, X-Files 2 will already be playing in theaters and my two favorite FBI agents won't be flying down to talk to everyone there.  That said, it looks like Chris Carter's not only planning for X-Files 3 ("Right Away," says Carter -- I'm assuming he means if X-Files 2 is a success), but it sounds like he might be gearing up for a story that deals with the world ending in 2012 thing from the show.  Will there be aliens in X-Files 3?  Sounds like that might be a good bet.

Chris Carter mentioned some things to USA Today about the X-Files movie coming out later this year.  There's also some nice pics of Mulder and Scully.  Carter says the "mythology" has already been wrapped up on the TV show and that we'll get a very definite stand-alone story.  This is a good thing, because it could bring in a ton of new X-Files fans, and a lot of new fans means there could be potentially more movies.  But whether or not that means the chronology, I guess (or maybe hope) is still up for grabs.  I'll be bummed if they completely ditch the chronology.

Either way, I want to believe.

Follwoing up the post from the other day: not only are they shooting the X-Files movie this winter, but Fox thinks it will be out over the summer.  Wow.  That's a quick turnaround.

Also noted is that the story will be a stand-alone, supernatural thriller.  So no alien conspiracies.  I'm not sure if that means it will take place after Mulder and Scully flew the coop in the Series finale or if they're going to go slightly retro.  On the bright side, I guess we don't have to wait that long to find out.

Do You Want to Believe?

According to this site, the X-Files 2 is actually filming in December of this year.  Apparently, this isn't Duchovny running at the mouth again, it's official.

Personally, I'm thrilled about this.  Depending on whether or not Greedo shot first, Fox Mulder is quite possibly my all-time favorite fiction character ever.  I remember seeing the first movie when the X-Files was around the height of its popularity.  I know a lot of people were frustrated by it, but I dug it.  I absolutely hated the series finale and felt like the show went on a season too long (I know some people think it went on several seasons too long).  There's been talk from Duchovny (and Carter, I think) that the movie will be a stand-alone, straight-up horror.  I'd love to see more alien conspiracies and stuff, but that sounds pretty cool to me.

But will other people be into it?  Will you?  When you think back on the X-Files, do you feel ripped off or do you get nostalgic and start whistling the theme music?
